What is perhaps even more exciting is the likely potential that Akasa Air (akasa means “the sky”) may take off before the end of this year. Billionaire investor, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, is venturing into the field of aviation for the first time with the budget airline, investing RS 260 crores (US$35 million), surely along with other investors. He has pulled in Vinay Dube, former CEO of Jet Airways, to Akasa Air. The target for the new airline is 70 planes in 4 years.
Vistara, a Tata SIA Airlines Limited airline, an Indian full-service airline based in Gurgaon with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport, as well as Air Asia India will also hopefully see some growth, along with IndiGo, an Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, who has remained a major airline, even as travel resumes after COVID-19. And there is also talk of the famed Tata family buying Air India and doing some mergers with other players, making for interesting times in aviation.
